ADDITION BY SUBTRACTION? GIANTS HOPE SO AFTER OFFSEASON OF CHANGE |
|

The records will show that the San Francisco Giants won the NL West and advanced to the NLCS. However, the Giants aren't resting on their laurels.
"We were (expletive) under .500 last year," said Giants GM Jared Book. "We needed to make changes, and that's why we said goodbye to most of our free agents."
In fact, the only free agent that was resigned by the Giants was shortstop Jack Shain. Shain hit .274 with 33 HR last year and was resigned to a 4-year, 36 million dollar deal.
Other than that, the Giants are looking to replace established players like catcher Cedrick Perez, outfielder Robert Williams and pitcher Keith Holman with home-grown replacements who come cheaper, and hopefully more consistent play.
Jason Greer, 22, will be the starting catcher for the Giants. He hit .295, with 7 HR and 49 RBI in AAA last year and is known for his defensive abilities. He was 1/8 in limited major league action last year. Greer was an 11th round pick in 2028.
Nobukazu Sakata, 24, will be replacing Williams in right field. Sakata has come on the second half of last year when the Giants had a bunch of injuries. He hit .222 with 6 HR and 18 RBI in limited HBL action, and .280 with 16 HR and 80 RBI in AAA. He was the Giants' 1st round pick in 2029.
Pedro Garza made eight major league starts last year, but this time will be more than a No. 5 starter. Garza was 2-3 with a 4.23 ERA in the HBL, but his numbers in AAA were spectacular. He was 13-4 with a 2.99 ERA. Garza was a 3rd round pick in 2029 and is only 22 years old.
"We were trying to sign more big name players," Book said. "But we have to be financially responsible, and there were no players within the price range we had for them."
Other additions the Giants made will battle for playing time in Spring Training, but many are speculating that Thomas Stangers' days with the Giants are numbered with the addition of George Stocksdale.
