GIANTS OUT TO PROVE THEY BELONG |
|
|
 |
The San Francisco Giants are 30-16 in their last two and a half months of baseball, which was enough to extend a 13 game lead in the NL West. Impressive, until you realize that all the other NL West teams are 58-69 and two are 56-71.
However, looking at the Giants, you can't help but think that a team led by reliable veterans and young unknowns are the best team San Francisco has fielded in years and they are trying to show they belong in a post-season and aren't products of a weak division.
You can't look at the Giants without looking at Wallace Weaver who is having another ho-hum season. Weaver is 16-7 with a 2.43 ERA. The rest of the rotation is around average, but they are getting a breakout season from 26-year-old rookie Nelson Gallegos who is 10-3 in his first action as a major leaguer.
Where the Giants feel improved is in the bullpen where their 3.18 ERA is 3rd in the NL, and a balanced offence that hits for average 1-9 and drives in runs.
For years the Giants struggled to get anyone hitting .300. This year, three everyday players are over the .300 mark and the five others are hitting at least .285.
The offence is led by newcomer Vaughn Hays (.292, 15 HR, 84 RBI), youngster Nobukazu Sakata (.334, 14 HR, 70 RBI) and a pair of first year starters - one of which is a true rookie.
Frank Lewis played sparingly last year, hitting only .146 in 123 ABs. This year, as a starter he is hitting .290 with 15 HR and 66 RBI.
Garland Brown, the team's first round pick in 2031 struggled in his beginnings as a big leaguer (3/21 in his first month) but has hit .377 in the last two months (72/191) with 10 of his 12 HRs coming in July and August. For the season he is hitting .312 with 12 HR and 59 RBI despite starting the year in AAA and is making himself a rookie of the year candidate.
